Gas-discharge induced flash sintering of YSZ ceramics at room temperature

Abstract This is the first study to conduct flash sintering of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) ceramics at room temperature (25 °C) under a strong electric field, larger than 1 kV/cm. At standard atmospheric pressure (101 kPa), probability successful approximately half that low pressure, lower 80 kPa. The success proposed process was determined based on high arc performance different pressures ranging from 20 100 3YSZ samples achieved maximum relative density 99.5% with grain size ∼200 nm. results showed as decreases, onset field corresponding empirical formula flashover voltage. Moreover, found be triggered by surface ceramic samples, and sample surfaces floated upward before complete overly pressures, resulting in failure sintering. reveals new method for facile preparation flash-sintered temperature, which will promote application industry.
